Apple Security Update 2008-007 (Mac OS X)

Blew off my iCal and several 3rd party utilities

I applied the fix, and re-started, and iCal, MacScan and 1Password (and a few others that I cannot remember) would not start, or re-set and re-start. I re-booted into Safe mode (hold down SHIFT key while re-starting), and that seemed to cure the issues. BTW, I had tried to roll back the clock to my nearest earlier snapshot in Time Machine, but the Restore button was grayed out. I guess I am lucky that it was, because the Safe re-boot corrected the issues. But, I wonder why I could not Restore with Time Machine. [alert admin]

Xray Vision 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Neat; duz wot it sez!

Nice little tool. I opened an external drive full of photos, some in folders. I could easily toggle individual photos or folders to disappear and re-appear. I already wrote to the developers suggesting that a key combo would be convenient to have to toggle visibility on and off, even if the app had to be opened (after opening in demo mode a short customer satisfaction window opens, giving the opportunity to rate and to comment). Help is built in, and more than adequate, including warnings not to fool with system files unless you are sure what you are doing. Bottom line: this does just what it says it will do, and for two bucks, it is a charmer. [alert admin]

TimeMachineEditor 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Less Filling; Tastes Great!

TimeMachine was slowing me down on my iMac during its incessant backups. TimeMachine Editor permitted me to restrict my backups to 2AM daily. That's about all that I really need, though I could easily add other backup times as well. TimeMachine Editor has a small footprint, and it is a set-it-and-forget-it application. Documentation is sparse, but well illustrated and more than adequate on the developer's web site. It is really an uncomplicated utility. The only thing that I would suggest would be automatic checking for updates each time that the app is opened. Highly recommended, and many thanks to the authors at timesoftware.free.fr--merci bien, mes amis! [alert admin]

PubSearch 0.8 (Mac OS X)

Nice little tool!

I have tried a few searches, and I met with pretty good luck most of the time. A few searches did not pan out, but maybe I was entering things incorrectly (for example "Vitamin K2" with the quotes returned nothing). A few times, after entering a search target that did not pan out, I had to quit and restart the app to do another search. So, I did not rate very high on stability. On the plus side, I found that double clicking on a highlighted item opened the associated web page. Nice feature. Wish there were documentation, and perhaps some error messages to assist when one enters something unacceptable. Other than those few quibbles, this is a very useful tool, and thanks to the author! Gizmo5 4.0.0.258 (Mac OS X)

Incompatible with earlier (3.1.2) Gizmo Project?

I managed to download and set the app, and it recognized **my** Gizmo Project account, though the account information was empty, and I had to enter my account/user information all over again. It did not add any of my earlier (Gizmo Project v3.1.2) contacts, however, and when I searched for them, they could not be found. So, all this leads me to believe that Gizmo5 is an entirely different beast from the earlier Gizmo Project, even if it shares the same icon. The implication is that your universe of contacts will all have to re-enter their account info under Gizmo5 for you to be able to reach them. This is a shame; it is starting out all over again. Skype maintains all contact information with each new update. The one positive change is that you can now enter a graphic of your choice as your account picture, rather than having to choose from the array of Pablum icons offered by the developer. I hope that the developers are reading this and that they will solve this serious disconnect between versions. [alert admin]

Reference Miner 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Reference Miner is SWEET!

Just tried it out for the first time for PubMed, searching on "bariatric surgery and diabetes", a very current topic as evidenced on the front page of today's Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/03/AR2008050301837.html?hpid%3Dtopnews&sub=AR. Results were almost instantaneous and astoundingly good. Huge thanks for a very helpful tool. --SteveG [alert admin]

Psi 0.12-RC2 (Mac OS X)

Does it have password login to chat rooms yet?

Psi was the very first jabber client that I tried. And, it worked just fine until I had to join chat in the "Boardroom" which was protected by a password. Psi did not have the capability to execute the password procedure, so I could not use it. Then, I found Adium which is also freeware and which DOES support passworded login to chat rooms. I have not looked back since. --Steve [alert admin]

Videobox 2.5.1 (Mac OS X)

A real quality product

Have been using it a lot with mpeg4 out and next-to-highest quality, auto send to iTunes. Works GREAT. NICE, NICE, NICE!!! I cannot seem to add a title to a download that will stick with it all the way to the mp4 stage, but that is easily remedied manually after the fact. Nice that iTunes can put it on my iPhone as well. This is a real quality product! Needs some illustrated instructions, however, as the many output options can be daunting. Developer support is OUTSTANDING; documentation, so far, is absent. Therefore I rated it neutral on Support/Documentation. Yes, price increased to $15. I should have bought it for $8 when I first downloaded it. --Steve [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Works OK on iMac 24" Core2 Duo, but seems slower

Previous version behaved as if it had a memory leak. After intensive use, my 4 GB Mac ground to a halt and had to be re-started with the power switch. I have just installed this new version, and have not had enough experience with it to know how it will behave, but initial impression is that it is somewhat slower than previous version. Also, it has other features like WebInspector under "Develop" menu item, and WebSnapper under "File," and I don't know what they all are, nor can I find any clue under "Help." As an aside, as browsers go, Flock is pretty slick, tough Safari is still my default browser. --Steve [alert admin]

Seemed to Install, but still not Flash content

The greyed-out QuickTime with a "?" haunts me all too often. I found two ways to recover from it: (1) remove the new plugins from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins [N.B., this is the Root Directory Folder, not your User Folder ~], or better yet, create a folder within that folder and name it "Disabled Plug-Ins," and move the suspect plug-ins into it, and (2) remove the Safari Preference, com.apple.Safari.plist, from your User Directory Library ~/Library/Preferences, and…

Tiger Problems

I have been having freezes following random character/font substitutions in bright green (move a window, and other characters get substituted)--sure sign of an imiment freeze. I did all kinds of font verification, trashing of all font cache files, removal of corrupted fonts, re-installation of fonts from the install disk, yadda, yadda, yadda, and still the problem persisted. Got worse when I used Eudora. Also, the machine froze in the middle of Steve…

to make it work in iTunes 4.7

OK, I tried the hack with HexEdit, and it sort of worked. The iPod Download icon appeared when I connected my iPod, and I clicked on it, and got a window with some text "Reading media module iPod...", and then the window disappeared along with the iPod Download icon. Now, this may have happened because the iPod was already sync-ed to the iTunes library. And, I have not tried to use it…
