EasyTask Manager 2.0 (Mac OS X)

2.0.7 & 2.0.8

My need is for a very simple task manager which this software provides. The interface is easy and, once you've got your head around the difference between 'Project' and 'Context', the flexibility in organising tasks is extensive. It's a pity that Apple doesn't include this sort of functionality in iCal - I really don't understand their thinking on this. Syncing both between iPhone and Mac desktop and either of those with the freely provided web server is seamless. I had a couple of small issues initially and the response from the developer was immediate both in terms of telling me that attention to them was in hand and in providing the fix (in an emailed attachment less than 24 hours after my initial query) which will be version 2.0.8 I recommend this software and have complete confidence in the developer. The price may seem high to some, but this software is a perfect example of the often heard axiom: "You get what you pay for". [alert admin]

BuddyPop 2.5.5 (Mac OS X)

Address display / Update check

Ever since I moved to Leopard, I have been unable to get BuddyPop to display address details even though I have checked the address field to display in the app's preference settings. It displays all other address book fields happily. I don't know if anyone else has had this experience? I've also just noticed that clicking on the 'Check for new version' button freezes the app. and I have to Force Quit it using Activity Monitor. (I was alerted to the latest version (2.5.5) on one of my regular checks of VT.) [alert admin]

Keyword Manager 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Keyword

I must say that at first glance this seems like a very good app. which it certainly should be given the exhorbitant price. I can't help thinking though, that although it may look graphically more slick, it does no more than Ken Ferry's excellent 'Keyword Assistant' which is free and available at http://homepage.mac.com/kenferry/software.html [alert admin]

Little Snitch 1.2.4b3 (Mac OS X)

1.2.4b3 won't mount

I have downloaded this file both via VT and the dev's website. In both cases I can't get the volume to mount. I have tried to extract the contained files using Pacifist but get only an empty folder on my desktop. :-( Anyone else? Tim. PS: I have also emailed the dev. with this comment. [alert admin]

iChatOnLogin.app 1.05 (Mac OS X)

Request & note to dev.

I like this app. - it works nicely for me. I often used to forget to manually login to iChat and don't like to have it in my logon items list because of the way iChat starts with the Buddy List open. I have more than enough items in my logon items list anyway! That said, I have two comments for the dev.: 1 The app. would be even better if there was a setting that allowed one to choose what status to logon under. I prefer 'away' and it currently defaults to 'available'. 2 The links on both VersionTracker and MacUpdate sites to the dev. seem to be broken. [alert admin]

HimmelBar 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Elegant solution

This is a really nice, elegant solution for me. I have a shortcut to my Applications folder on my dock and this performs in a similar way BUT it has the ability to filter out those apps. that, for example, I keep in my dock and therefore are effectively duplicated or those that I access so infrequently, like 'Safari Enhancer', that I don't mind accessing through finder when I do. All this keeps my list of Applications much shorter in HimmelBar resulting in less scrolling to find what I'm wanting. So... another small step up the productivity ladder. One comment to the developer, since I'm really picky: it would be nice to see a slicker icon in the menu bar for this app., but many thanks for it - a neat addition to my Mac. [alert admin]

Auto-update NOT...

The patch worked fine for me when I downloaded it from VT though. One caveat: the progress thermometer displayed the spinning bar from start to finish as opposed to properly displaying progress of the update. Be patient.

What is the real utility of this software?

Look at it this way: you slim and backup an app. You'll know very quickly, if not immediately, if the slimmed version works as you'd expect. If it does, then delete the backup. If it doesn't then you've got an easy and quick way to restore it. If something does go wrong after you've deleted the backup, and which you failed to spot when checking, then you can always re-install…

Punk ass jerk

It is one thing to report on your views of an application but quite another to be so publicly insulting. Further, your admission that you had not backed up for two months, at the same time mentioning your use of SuperDuper! - an app. I personally use and which allows you to schedule backups without user interaction - is, to me at least, indicative of a lack of understanding both of your own responsibilities when…

Emory needs a spellchecker.

Err - pardon me - please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the purpose of VT was to evaluate software as opposed to being a forum for criticising the presentation of a website. This developer has created a useful utility which will have taken much thought, time and effort and has released it, free of charge, for anyone who feels they might benefit from it. That rates pretty highly on…

Volume

You're right if it's just volume you want to adjust. I don't use it because I'm a minimalist too, but look at the screen shots (click the link in the developer's text) - they'll show you what else this little utility can do.

7.0.8 is ONLY for Acrobat Reader

Yep: I have done a search for '7.0.8' on the Adobe site and found nothing otherthan reference to 'Adobe Reader'. (Check out: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=7.0.8&action=Search) In addition, I have followed the 'Downloads>Updates>Acrobat-Macintosh' links from the Adobe home page and again found nothing relating to 7.0.8 (Check out: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Macintosh). Go figure.
