Tangerine 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Much Improved - almost Essential ![]()

(I am changing my review from the previous version which did not work for me.) I've tried a couple of color picker apps and Tangerine definitely seems the most flexible and useful in a multi-application environment! Very good. I can pick a color from a website and keep it in a palette for use in Fireworks, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. It is very useful in this regards and even does CMYK, so print users or scarfing colors from CMYK graphics for use on in RGB is pretty seamless. There are a lot of methods, so there is a small learning curve, but they have videos online to help you. Suggestions for improvements: docking or minimizing the palette would be a nice option when not in use, since the palette takes up a piece screen real estate. 2. I noticed that in Fireworks, e.g., I keep having to reselect Tangerine as my palette option in the color/swatch selector. That may be a limitation of Adobe's code, but just thought it would be nice if Tangerine could stay the default mode. However, in the applications I've tried, clicking on the Tangerine palette itself will load the color into the foreground color. The only thing that made me hesitate as I was filling out the 'buy' form was the price at $40. I started looking around for coupons, discounts, and alternative apps. It is a high price for a one trick pony, even though it is very good at what it does. While I don't use CMYK very much, there are other html pickers that integrate into the color selector, ( and one even adds swatches to the bottom of the color selector and is free: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23993 ), in the end, I decided that the future needs of CMYK may be the better choice. For a web developer professional, it was a borderline choice, considering it cost about 1/4 of the upgrade price for most of my major apps. I just am suggesting that a lower price might make for a wider market for the rest of solo web designers. [alert admin]

Grammarian PRO X 1.8.1 (Mac OS X)
I love what this application can do when I need it to proof things, but the darn app slows down my entire system in 10.4.11 and can create spinning beach balls galore. I'm in Safari and the app starts with a hot key, but Safari just chokes. I've noticed this problem in many apps. Spell Catcher, which doesn't have all the features of Grammarian, but doesn't cause these types of systemic problems. [alert admin]

Advanced Web Ranking 6.0 (Mac OS X)
Google Dangers? Loss of ranking?
Hi folks, I have been interested in a program like AWR and have demoed an earlier version, but when I work on Google, I see warnings from google itself not to use things like Web Position Gold because of the way they ping the search engine and ask for info. I'm concerned that this program might fall into that category. Any ideas or feedback? [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 3.6.3 (Mac OS X)
I was trying this as a demo, and it produces some nice layouts. However, I asked presales questions twice and got no replies. I even had my questions deleted without being answered. While I thought I might enjoy this program for fast cookie cutter creations for low budget clients, the lack of response and the concern over the upgrade charges makes me wonder if the program would be worth it. If that is the expected level of support, can't endorse the program no matter how much or little it costs. [alert admin]

I love this program and have used it effectively for quite some time. Support is fast, however, this release is the buggiest I've encountered. I'm getting errors with the program trying to write preferences to places it should not. I am trying to apply the new advanced features like Captcha and time outs for posting. However, the program is crashing trying to write invalid preferences and it isn't finding pages that are set as absolute or root relative. And the preference files allow different error and success pages than do the settings files and I think there is a conflict here. [alert admin]

SQLGrinder 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)
Okay, trying a demo. Cannot import, so can't test it's quality. Can't select tables with an GUI. You have to know the table and type in a raw command. Can't find a menu selection for viewing table structure. That's a lot of money for a few features... [alert admin]

I'm finding a lot more problems with VT 4.5.1 as well. I'm seeing a lot of my apps that have been updated now listed right next to the previously updated version, still showing the old version number on the "available" updates. So I'm seeing both the current version I have and the older version I used to have but do not have anymore. If I remove the old version from view, I'm concerned it…

I think your condemnation is a bit unfair. No developer can anticipate all the changes that might be required in a major OS upgrade. Just look at how many apps are broken in Vista, and it takes resources to redevelop a product for such an upgrade. Only top tier developers get prior access to all the hooks in the new OS before release, but even Adobe is suffering with some of its apps not being…

I heard that there was an audio problem with pops and clicks in this version. Is that fixed yet? Do you have any other recommendations for large project [multi-file] processing for FLV? I hear that the limit is 1000 files at a time? Or 100 files at a time? It doesn't stop working forever after you've processed 100 files ... no?

Hi, my concern for upgrading was exactly what loss if any there was to jpegs. The literature was silent on this aspect, while implying a lot. How do you know it is bit for bit identical? Any docs support this feature? Thanks Jeff
