PowerRIP 7.39 (Mac OS X)
I almost hesitated to buy this software because of these shoddy reviews so I felt the need to clear things up after trying the demo and buying Powerrip 7.4.1 for my Epson R1800. It is great software and the wealth of options and quality are both exactly what I wanted for accurate low-cost proofing for press jobs. It's a little finicky to set up but once it's going, it's solid and the colour accuracy for pseudo-press proofing at home is really what sold me. I had an issue with overprints not working but the tech support responded the same day to tell me the fix for it (use Press Proof setting) and it was resolved. Otherwise Postscript 3 support from my CS3 Indesign and Illustrator are good but I have managed to get bad renderings with extremely complex files that were basically just set up to see how crazy a PS L3 job I could send to this (gradients overprinted by masked multiply with type, etc) but fortunately, for most needs it won't hiccup. Combine this program with a cheap printer profiling app/hardware like Colorvisions PrintFix Pro and you've got a great little home proofer. [alert admin]

Spyder 1.2.3 (Mac OS X)
I suggest the developers change the app name since Spyder is a well-known application for the hardware calibration device by the same name. I have it in my Applications folder and i'm sure they have a copyright for the name. [alert admin]

OSS 3D 2.01 (Mac OS X)
if you are wondering why you are getting crashes with Parallels, chances are it's because of OSS 3-D. uninstalling it fixed the crashes. PLEASE JUST STICK TO AN iTUNES PLUG-IN. this all-apps daemon thing is a complete disaster. [alert admin]

OSS 3D 2.01 (Mac OS X)
i had to uninstall this since it was maxing the cores idling on my MBP. the Windowmanager process was floored and the daemon is frozen. nice software for iTunes but not a fan of the global daemon. [alert admin]

I was wary of trying yet another paint app but I was never happy with Alias Sketchbook's limited tool set and don't do paint style things enough to buy Painter so when I tried this, it fit solidly between both. As an oil painter, the accuracy of the thinned oils is really great and overall, it has that enjoyability of painting without the messiness (or cost). great for sketching ideas or compositions. $20??!! JEDict 4.2 (Mac OS X)
I know Sergey was working on another program so I had given up on a UB of JEDict but this a great surprise. such a great app and all my Windows friends studying Japanese cry when I show them how good JEDict is. [alert admin]

D-Vision 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)
This app is so much friendlier and reliable than most of the other apps like this. I'm happy the Intel build is just as great. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 2.5a6 (Mac OS X)
After months of not using this formerly much-loved app, I tried it again to see if it was an more stable. I was happy for a bit and then wondered why iSync started crashing and realized what was different (despite not even invoking an open dialog). I quit Default Folder and it stopped crashing. this app is nice but it's completely useless in any environment where people value their time and work since you're walking on eggs shells hoping this won't bring down your apps. Color Schemer Studio 1.5 (Mac OS X)
The photo sampler tool is nice but $50 is incredibly overpriced for a program that has at least 5 cheaper alternatives. They may not be as robust but you'd have to have money to burn to pay this much for something like this. I don't. Too bad. [alert admin]

in response to it being free "for how long" - i think their business model is, like the interface, based on iTunes. Give away the app and make your money on the easily accessible store. i don't think they will start charging for this. It looks like a great app and i'm definitely going to give it a try for a while but it needs to have an autoactivate plug in for Illustrator. i'll reserve…

after playing with this for a while, i can say that it does produce punchier CMYK output than Photoshop. a little contrasty in places but definitely good for rich colours. I just wish the UI wasn't so limited. you can't even zoom.
