Product Description:

ImageMagick is a software suite to create, edit, and compose bitmap images. It can read, convert and write images in a large variety of formats. Images can be cropped, colors can be changed, various effects can be applied, images can be rotated and combined, and text, lines, polygons, ellipses and Bézier curves can be added to images and stretched and rotated.

Most of the functionality of ImageMagick can be used interactively from the command line; more often, however, the features are used from programs written in the programming languages C, Ch, C++, Java, Lisp, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl/Tk, for which ready-made ImageMagick interfaces (MagickCore, MagickWand, PerlMagick, Magick++, PythonMagick, MagickWand for PHP, RMagick, TclMagick, L_Magick, and JMagick) are available. This makes it possible to modify or create images automatically and dynamically.

ImageMagick CommentaryArchaic stuff - Version: 6.3.9, 3/9/2008 07:05PM PST

Bytesmiths, using photoshop, I can spend a couple of seconds to do any batch processing with it!! And I can prepare very complex batch actions visually. Better, I don't need to pay attention to a language syntax or to a command spelling error!
The true great apps are those that can do complex stuff in an easy way for users. Imagemagick can be a great curiosity for programmers but will always be a niche for those who like to delirate by being able to rotate an image writing 5 words and a couple of characters. I don't have time for that so I like to rotate mine by drooping a menu, sorry. I use extensively open source software and I always encourage the groups of developers to pay as much attention to the GUI's as to the quality of underlying code. Some projects are moving toward this way of thinking and are experiencing success, such as NEOOFFICE, GIMP, GRASS, QGIS, every flavor of LInux operative systems and so on. These code only "apps" are great as prototypes to test code but are archaic applications as user experience.

This is a command-line suite of programs -- don't download it if you want a slick GUI.

That said, it is a wonderful tool for modifying images via scripts, which is great for batch processing.

How much time would you spend re-sizing a folder full of images, using Photoshop? With ImageMagick, it's one command line.

If you need to manipulate images from a script, this is the tool for you. You can even call it from PHP to manipulate images on-the-fly on a website, for generating thumbnail images, for example.

Well while I appreciate the opensource community for its contributions to the OS X experience- this is an X11 dependent app no? IMHO apps like this should be left on SourceForge and not billed on places like Versiontracker. While I can build my own app and compile where someone else has done the work its not the easiest thing to do for most folks.
While very useful, this application and what it takes to get working is as user friendly as Linux is to a new-to-computers users. Not for the squeamish or those who barely even know their way around a GUI.
