Product Description:

X Lossless Decoder(XLD) is a tool for Mac OS X that is able to decode/convert/play various 'lossless' audio files. The supported audio files can be split into some tracks with cue sheet when decoding. It works on Mac OS X 10.3 and later.

XLD supports the following formats:
  • (Ogg) FLAC (.flac/.ogg)
  • Monkey's Audio (.ape)
  • Wavpack (.wv)
  • TTA (.tta)
  • Apple Lossless (.m4a) [10.4 and later]
  • AIFF, WAV, etc
Other formats supported by Libsndfile are also decodable. XLD uses not decoder frontend but library to decode, so no intermediate files are generated. All of the supported formats can be directly split with the cue sheet. XLD also supports so-called 'embedded' or 'internal' cue sheet.

Currently you can choose output format from WAVE,AIFF and Raw PCM. In addition, you can choose Ogg Vorbis (aoTuV), MPEG-4 AAC (QuickTime/CoreAudio), MP3 (LAME), Apple Lossless, FLAC and HE-AAC (aacPlus v1/v2) in the GUI version.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed an AccurateRip hash calculation for the first and last track

xAct does this too. Maybe the process is streamlined here though.

If you want to convert a whole FLAC album, use Toast.

Drag the FLAC files into Audio CD, and save as a disc image. Mount the disc image, and iTunes will pick up the Gracenote data. You can then import it just like a normal CD to your specifications.

X Lossless Decoder Reviewa bit unwieldy, but ok - Version: 20080601, 7/1/2008 04:08AM PST

Just tried it for the first time.

Plus: any conversion between:

WAV, AIFF, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Apple Lossless, PCM, MPEG-4 AAC, MPEG-4 HE-AAC, WavPack, LAME MP3 and PCM (Big or Little Endian)
And it works!

Minus: Had to look for a window first, then found the most important in "Preferences" to shift between conversions and other features, "Help" only available in very small "ReadMe" file.

The Player crashed the whole app when "forced" to play MP3s, Lossless files worked, but only 1 at a time. No playlist. Decided not to use the player.

Had to direct the app 3 times at least to the folder where new files should go. Doesn't seem to remember this location.

Stars: Four

X Lossless Decoder CommentaryUseful for CD burning too - Version: 20080330, 3/31/2008 04:42AM PST

XLD provides a convenient way of converting Apple lossless files in my iTunes library to WAV files for burning "true" CD's. iTunes does this too, of course, but it adds the WAV files to the library, which I then have to find and delete. XLD allows you to specify the output location, so "cleaning up" after burning a CD is easy. XLD allows splitting files but, unfortunately, not joining them during conversion.
