Product Description:

avast! antivirus Mac Edition has the same ICSA Certified scan engine as all avast! antivirus products, offering best-in-class protection against the latest and legacy virus, malware, trojan and spyware risks. Virus definitions and scanning capabilities are updated extremely often (sometime several times per day, depending on current threats), so you can rest assured that your Mac is protected at all times, all you need to do is install, configure once (if you want to change the default settings) and forget about malware being a problem. Install and forget: we've got it covered.

Some key feature of avast! antivirus Mac Edition:
  • Full on-access scanning - which scans files as you access them, to make sure they are safe from infection
  • On-demand scanning - for scheduled or ad-hoc scans of your system volumes
  • Mail protection - integrated mail protection can stop infection at one of the most vulnerable access vectors
  • Virus Chest - a safe storage place for infected or suspected files, where they cannot harm your system
  • Fully automatic updating - of the program and virus definitions
  • Full scanner preference control - set avast! to work in the way you want
Under-the-hood technology features:
  • Native execution of virus database on Intel platform Macs, with fast emulation on PowerPC of assembler-level parts
  • Multi-threaded scanning daemon
  • Industry leading unpacker support (for archives)
  • Able to upgrade the definitions database, even while doing background scanning
  • Application itself multi-threaded
  • Fail-safe updating architecture (if the daemon fails to do an update, the main application will do it instead)
  • Kernel extension architecture for capturing after-close events on modified files
  • Optimized software architecture, including non-blocking system calls
  • Entire avast! Mac Edition performance approach - the program is designed for speed and non-degraded system performance: you can run avast! and edit or work with large resource hungry applications with no or very little system performance issues

avast! antivirus ReviewWorst Software EVER - Version: 2.74, 8/21/2008 07:26PM PST

Hasan Edain (NPC Unlimited)
This software is worse than the viruses it claims to guard against.
I have had nothing but problems from the moment of installation.
I bought it based on the reviews, boy was I wrong!
It causes mail to crash at least twice a day, forcing me to rebuild my entire mail database at a cost of several minutes.
It eats up a huge amount of CPU.
It is poorly configureable.
There is no way to easily turn it off or uninstall it.
I can only minimize, not hide it, and the scans are incredibly slow.
All I want now is to get it off my computer and to warn everyone from ever giving these people money for this awful product.

avast! antivirus ReviewYet another Windows bias -- how quaint - Version: 2.74, 4/24/2008 03:51AM PST

So in my confusion over how to install the license key for the "free" home edition that is linked to on the Macintosh page, I finally contacted their support, which to their credit, responded quickly.

Apparently there's no free home edition for Macintosh users -- only Windows users. Why then have a link to a "free" edition for home users on the Macintosh page, and then not to anywhere specify that no such thing exists, is confusing and misleading. It's also Mac-unfriendly.

Hate to say it, but this is yet another example of a Windows bias. This will turn a lot of Mac users off I'm afraid, and with a growing marketshare (who would have ever thunk?) it's not a "friendly" position to take.

Another thing I also noticed upon dis-installing it (something there is also absolutely no adequate support on how to do) is that my machine (which is a very fast RAM heavy final generation Power Mac G5), suddenly ran much faster again -- noticeably so. I had no idea it was avast that had slowed things down so much.

Also, once up and running for whatever grace (test drive) period was allowed, avast kept starting my email application without me asking. I have one "utility" account that has no email associated with it and to have avast constantly open it only for me to have to shut it down is a pain. No matter whether or not the mail support is checked or not this happens.

Overall there is no help for Mac users other than to say "you can download a free edition" that is non-existent.

Thanks, but I'll go back to using my trusty ClamXav. It doesn't provide much support either but it's free and it works like a charm and doesn't slow my system down at all. You set it to monitor email and choose a few folders (desktop, downloads etc.) to monitor and forget about it.

Sorry avast guys. You're on the right track but give it another shot.

avast! antivirus CommentaryCrashes -- - Version: 2.74, 2/28/2008 06:28PM PST

GNJ
OS 10.4.11,
1.5 GHz G4
1.25 G RAM

Crashed frequently. Contacted customer support via email and got a reasonably quick response.
Unlike some others, it was easy to remove from my system --- only 3 items.

I'll be watching for the next update.
