Machines at War ReviewTerrific strategic combat game - Version: 1.2, 9/25/2008 04:34PM PST

PowerTower180e
In Machines at War, you manage not only tactical forces, but the military-industrial complex behind those forces. You begin with a small amount of resources that you can deploy to grow your wealth (by building ore diggers), construct factories to build offensive machines and repair vehicles, build power plants crucial to their operation, erect defensive walls, construct airports that provide you with an airborne force, conduct research and development that provide you with more powerful offensive and defensive tools, and send out recon units. At the beginning of each game, you can also dictate the geography -- from desert to frozen tundra to forest, some of which determines how far you must go -- and fight for -- crucial resources. Finally, you can dial in your skill level, from newbie to expert.
This ranks among the best $19.95 I've ever spent. For awhile, I struggled to hold my own. Gradually, you gain insight and skills. After several weeks of playing, I've reached the point where I can win every game. So it would be interesting if the computer opponent had greater skill levels to provide some surprises and sneak attacks.
Still, this is an entertaining shareware offering that is recommended.

Version 1.2 is a VERY nice update to Machines at War. The 3 new vehicles are bad a$$ and can easily take on huge numbers of enemy. The new "Robotic" difficulty really is hard, now. I find myself defending A LOT, with no ability to strike back. The enemy just keeps coming!

I've found that the turrets are much more useful, as well. They are not so easily destroyed and react faster than before.

Now the game takes at least an hour or more to play. Cool! It's that much more fun now. I can't wait to see what future updates will bring to the game...

Machines at War is a very fun, exciting strategy game. The graphics are great & the sounds are of equal quality. The game runs on the slowest Macs to the new Intel Macs - the game adjusts.

Since the game is fairly fast-paced, it's a fun 30-45 minute time burner. Great game, makes you think, cheap, and ADDICTING! Machines at War is just 1 of many fun games they offer, too!
