Product Description:

Advanced Mac OS X disk defragmentation and optimization. Supports the very latest features of HFS+, including journaling, case sensitive filenames and adaptive hot file clustering (which means it won't mess-up the Hot Zone).

What's new in this version:

  • Improved appearance and behaviour of lock button.
  • Applications are now digitally signed.
  • Fixed a problem where iDefrag could hang when commencing the On-line algorithm.
  • Increased the speed of the Compact algorithm for some scenarios.
  • Fixed some minor user interface transgressions.
  • The workaround for Leopard’s AHCI driver bug is now disabled when running from 10.5.3 or later.
  • Fixed a problem where the algorithm or class-set drop-down boxes on the toolbar would be incorrectly disabled after defragmenting.
  • Fixed an interaction problem with SMART monitoring utilities (such as the iStat applications and widgets); iDefrag will no longer report that SMART monitoring is not possible when running those applications.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel

The online defrag works, but the developer admits that the bundle CD Maker has a bug which "may prevent it from working on faster machines." I've tried it on 3 machines, all of which continually hang in the License Agreement splash screen.

As you need to build a boot cd to use the app in any serious way, it is functionally broken.

I have a CD-R of another vendor in hand, as they patched the image, the tool itself got fragmented and if you remember CD-R (especially) or DVD-R has huge, bad access times, it is a problem.

I made a backup image of the CD-R which got fragmented, in first shoot, iDefrag said "There isn't enough free space", as this tool cares about safety first, there aren't fast and dangerous tricks of using memory. I just remembered the "Compact" option, I compacted the virtual disk first.

Now having enough free, contiguous space on my CD-R image, I could defragment it fully.

The boot time from Firewire 800, external Pioneer 110D (Formac) of same tool decreased from 6 min to 4 min since there are much less random seeks and the files of same context (e.g. Frameworks) are now near each other.

I will also try same trick with another vendors DVD and I know the results will be even more impressive since DVD was designed with DATA in mind unlike CD which is actually designed for music.

This tool does fit to some home users, business users but if you are in Video/Pro DTP/Audio business or ship any commercial CD/DVD to customers, it could serve great to user experience.

Most users probably won't consider the idea of defragmenting their hard drive. Apple claims it's unnecessary, and basic defragmentation is handled by the OS. However, if you move a lot of big files, iDefrag is a good option. It's completely dependable using the convenient "online" option; running it from a disk is easy, but the full defragmentation algorithm may take some time.

Customer support provides clear assistance within a few business hours, and it's easy to feel safe with the software.
